Olivia is an Archbishop Carroll Senior and she and I had been planning her Senior session at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA for weeks- and then the forecast called for rain. I assured Olivia not to worry—rainy weather can actually make your photos even more special! Instead of rescheduling, we embraced the opportunity to capture stunning, unique moments that matched the vibe she was hoping for. Here’s how to make the most of a rainy-day fall session.

Go with the Flow

Rain gives everything a soft vibe—perfect for creating dreamy, natural photos. Overcast skies create flattering light that brings out the best in skin tones and makes colors pop. By embracing the weather and going with the flow, you'll get authentic, candid shots that feel personal and natural.

Fun Props for Rainy Days

In the name of “going with the flow” when my umbrella turned inside out in the Longwood parking lot, I stopped into their gift shop and purchased a new one- and what a great last minute decision that was! This little touch added charm and personality to Olivia’s photos. Don’t be afraid to have fun with it!

Cozy, Covered Spots

Rain can give you the perfect excuse to explore beautiful, covered areas like gazebos, porches, or tree-lined paths. These locations not only provide shelter but also create some great images.  We spent some time in Longwood’s Grotto and the Chimes Tower, two places I don’t normally visit during portrait sessions

Colors Enhanced by Rain

One of the best things about rain is how it makes colors look even more vibrant. The blue in Olivia’s dress popped against the wet ground and trees and the white stood out even more. Whether you're wearing a cozy outfit or something more formal, the rain will enhance those colors in your final images!

Rain on the day of your Senior session doesn’t have to be a reason to panic—it can be what makes your photos stand out from the rest! The rainy weather can result in uniquely beautiful photos. So grab an umbrella, throw on your favorite outfit, and let’s turn that rainy day into something magical!
